Unlocking Flow: How to Move from Feeling Stuck to Fulfilled

June 04, 20254 min read

Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right, yet something feels off? Maybe your to-do list is long, but your motivation is low. You're busy, but not fulfilled. If that sounds familiar, you might be out of flow—and that’s exactly what we’re diving into today.

In our latest video on Kokoro Creators, we explore two powerful mindsets around flow—one where everything feels stuck and frustrating, and another where momentum and meaning bring you alive.

What Is Flow, Really?

Flow is that sweet spot where your mind and body are aligned in focused effort, while doing something that challenges you and empowers you with a feeling of giving a meaningful contribution to something bigger than yourself. It's the zone where time disappears, creativity flows, and fulfillment follows.

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, describes flow as the state where your inner world is in harmony, leading to meaningful growth in your outer world. Here are two of my favorite quotes in reading this book so far,

“Happiness does not depend on outside events, but how we interpret them.”

 — Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

From Frustration to Fulfillment

You might be familiar with the feeling of spinning your wheels—busy, but not productive. It feels like being stuck in a loop of unfulfilling activity, which can leave you drained, discouraged, and doubting yourself (what we call FUDDD: fear, uncertainty, doubt, dread, and discouragement).

But when you're in flow, you may not see it immediately but there's a feeling of accomplishment. There's meaning. There's joy. You're not chasing success for the sake of it—you're aligned with a deeper purpose that brings natural success as a byproduct.

“Don't aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued. It must ensue as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a course greater than one’s self.”

 — Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

The connection of Flow and the Six Human Needs

Inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Tony Robbins introduced six psychological needs that influence how fulfilled we feel:

  1. Certainty

  2. Variety

  3. Significance

  4. Connection & Love

  5. Growth

  6. Contribution

The first four are foundational, but the last two—growth and contribution—are what lead to long-term joy and fulfillment through experiencing flow. When you’re stretching your limits in the service of something meaningful, you naturally enter that state where everything clicks. Some people call this serendipity and the Universe moves to support your commitment. One of my favorite quotes about achieving this type of manifestation comes from the introduction of The Power of TED by David Emerald. It says,

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back... the moment one definitely commits [oneself], then Providence moves too... A whole stream of events issues from the decision... [with] unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance... Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

So, How Do You Get Into a Flow State?

Here are a few practical steps to move into flow:

Step 1: Find a Safe Space: Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. Imagine light flowing in through the top of your head and out through the bottoms of your feet. Imagine a safe space where you are held, protected, and have all your needs met.

Step 2: Imagine Your Desired Result: When you gain the ability to control your inner state, it will be because you have gained the power to control your focus. Focusing on your desired result and visualizing “what done looks like” (as Brene Brown says) is the fastest way to train your focus.

Step 3: After you have set your desire on your vision, ask yourself, “What is my one next step right now to move closer toward my desired result?” This could mean letting go of hurt. It could mean taking action toward the outward result. Your intuition will guide you along your Abundance journey when you ask.

Final Thoughts

Flow is less about hustling harder and more about aligning with meaning. When your work lights you up and contributes to something greater than yourself, success follows naturally. So instead of chasing outcomes, tune into your purpose—and let fulfillment flow.
